Against generative AI detection at EAMS 2023
I gave a talk on the 20th of June 2023 at the EAMS 2023 conference (E-Assessment in Mathematical Sciences).
Title: Against Generative AI detection
Abstract: When faced with the unknown, humanity is always tempted by simple solutions. In the (probably very short) era of large language models, these are the AI output detectors.
I believe that AI detection should not be part of the new policies developed for higher education, and the aim of this talk is to explain why and encourage everyone to engage with this very important question. The talk, based on my posts on this blog, will survey current detection solutions, their flaws and the impact and reactions of students, and briefly survey potential alternatives, ultimately advocating in favour of assessment reform.

If updates turn out to be needed, I’ll put them here and on Twitter.
The talk was based on a series of three posts, one of which is yet to appear:
Part 1: “How to fool detectors“.
